Loddon Vale Bridge Club was started in January 1980 by a breakaway group from Twyford Bridge Club. The Club played on Thursday evenings at Our Lady of Peace Church Hall and initially had a membership of about 30.
During the first year the membership rose to 87. Two of the current members – David Cullington and Kathleen Maddox– have been with the Club since it started, and others, Vlad and Blanka Peksa and Reg Watson were among the people who joined in the first year.
The Club became increasingly popular and it became necessary to find a new venue large enough to accommodate all the members. In 1988 the large hall in Radstock Community Centre became available. As it was local, had plenty of storage for tables and stationery, and a large car park it was an ideal venue and the Club moved there in October 1988. - The fact that it had a large bar where members could go to ‘discuss’ things after play was an added attraction!
Loddon has continued to thrive and it currently has a membership of around 120. Teams are entered for both the Berks & Bucks, and Chiltern leagues of eight, and also the Bracknell League teams of four.
Each year the club runs an Individual Competition and a Pairs competition. In addition it runs a teams event for the Maxwell Members Trophy, a cup donated in 1984 by Gladys Maxwell, one of the founder members of the Club, and a pairs event for a cup donated in 1997 by the Earley Community Association.
The Club has always tried to provide a warm, friendly atmosphere as well as a good standard of bridge. The Christmas party helps to encourage the social side of things and so does the annual weekend which started in 1988 and now takes place every November. |
